Janssen Connected Care Challenge


Deadline for submissions: March 25, 2012


The Janssen Connected Care Challenge is now accepting submissions of concepts that improve the experience and outcomes of patients, as they transition from hospital to home care. This challenge awards mentorship and a total of $250,000 to entrepreneurs with the best solutions for improving care transitions.

2012 Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge


Deadline for submissions: March 23, 2012


Now in its second year, the Sanofis 2012 Data Design Diabetes™ Innovation Challenge is reaching out to the top innovation accelerators, to find the next breakthrough to help millions of Americans living with diabetes.

The Innovation Challenge includes over  $200K in prizes, a partnership with Startup America, and access to accomplished mentors. Last year’s winner, Boston-based Ginger.io, went on to raise $1.7M in venture funding and has grown to a team of seven!

Mobile Devices Roundtable: Safeguarding Health Information


This Friday, March 16, 2012, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. EDT 

HealthIT.gov welcomes you to join via video webcast 

The Roundtable event is free and open to the public but you need to register online. 

Real World Usages and Real World Privacy & Security Practices 

The Roundtable will include three panels comprised of federal agency representatives, practicing providers, and representatives of research, provider and industry organizations. The event will be an interactive discussion with moderators encouraging interaction between the panelists and the audience.  

Public Comment Period: Have Opinions about Safeguarding Health Information? 

You will also be invited to provide input on mobile devices’ uses and the current and emerging privacy and security best practices regarding protecting and securing health information while using mobile devices. In conjunction with the input gathered during the Mobile Devices Roundtable: Safeguarding Health Information event, your input will help inform the development of an effective and practical way to bring awareness and understanding to those in the clinical sector regarding protecting and securing health information while using mobile devices. 

The public comment period will remain open until Friday, March 30, 2012.

SXSW News: Jerry Levin’s StartUp Health Academy for Entrepreneurs Announces First Class

In an interesting twist on the accelerator and incubator model for entrepreneurs, StartUp Health Academy announced its first class of “healthcare transformers” today at SXSW in Austin.

StartUp Health, which is chaired by former Time Warner CEO Jerry Levin and is backed by AT&T and the California HealthCare Foundation, is backing 10 entrepreneurs who are focused on “fixing a broken healthcare system in ways that significantly reduce costs and dramatically improve care.”

Unlike programs that support start-ups, some of these companies are well on their way in terms of funding and staff. What has been missing, according to StartUp Health, are the other support functions aimed specifically at companies in the still-nascent digital health care field… See full article.

HDI III: Health Datapaloosa

StartUp Health is excited to be involved in the planning of Health Data Initiative III: Health Datapaloosa on June 5th-6th in Washington, DC. The HDI Forum is a public-private collaboration among stakeholder organizations in the health data ecosystem. The 2012 HDI Forum brings together a diverse group of data experts, technology developers, entrepreneurs, policy makers, health care system leaders, CIOs, CTOs, and community advocates to support innovative applications of health and health care data. The deadline to apply as a speaker is March 30th.

NYeC Announces Call For Speakers for the 2012 Digital Health Conference

The New York eHealth Collaborative has opened the application period for those interested in speaking at this year’s conference, which takes place on October 15th-16th, at New York City’s Pier Sixty. This gathering will address new healthcare innovations and progress, health information exchange, chronic care, Medicaid redesign, Meaningful Use, Health Homes, healthcare apps, and software solutions. If you are interested in speaking, applications are now being accepted here. The deadline for speaker applications is March 23rd, 2012.
